[ Detoxification, Detox ]
The physiological or medicinal removal of toxic substances from a living organism, carried out mainly by the liver and kidneys.
Medically, detoxification can be achieved by decontamination of poison ingestion and the use of antidotes as well as techniques such as dialysis or chelation therapy.
Detoxification can also refer to the period of withdrawal from exposure to toxic substances to allow the organism to return to homeostasis after long-term exposure to a substance, such as recovery from addiction or prolonged exposure to environmental toxicants.
