Aromatic compound

[ Aromatic compound ]

A cyclic, planar molecule with a ring of resonance bonds that are highly stable and do not readily react with other substances.

While aromaticity as a chemical property bears no general relationship with the smell the term originated with the discovery that certain odiferous plant molecules, such as the terpenes, had common chemical properties.
