Myelin

[ myelin, myelin sheath, white matter ]

An insulating sheath around the axon of may nerve cells. It functions as an electrically insulating layer which increases the speed at which impulses are conducted.

Myelin is the “white matter” of the brain comprising of about 70% cholesterol. Lecithin and docosahexaenoic acid (DHA) are important constituents of myelin.
