[ Reactive oxygen species, ROS ]
Chemically reactive chemical species containing oxygen.
ROS are a natural byproduct of the metabolism of oxygen. They have roles in cell signalling and maintaining homeostasis.
Exposure to heat, UV light or ionising radiation can significantly increate ROS levels, resulting in cumulative structural damage known as oxidative stress.
